The Eiffel Tower

A structure recognized the world over, the Eiffel Tower on the Champ de Mars in Paris stands about 1,050 feet tall and was the highest manmade building on earth until the Chrysler Building in New York City surpassed it in 1930. The iconic structure was originally constructed as an entrance arch for the 1889 World’s Fair. It is made from over 18,000 pieces of iron held together with two-and-a-half million rivets.

The total weight of the tower is about 10,000 tons. Sixty tons of paint were originally applied to protect it from the elements, and the tower is repainted every seven years. Because it was designed to be resistant to the wind, it only sways a few inches. The heat from the sun actually causes it to move further; when the iron on the side facing the sun heats up and expands, the tower moves up to seven inches in the opposite direction.
